Directing

To paraphrase G. K. Chesterton, one of the chief pleasures of life is surprise. I firmly believe in the power of surprise as a director - it opens up our minds to new possiblities. I want to push myself, fellow artists, and the audience to allow themselves to be surprised by storytelling. I also believe theatre has a rich history and we can rely on its traditions and practices in contemporary theatre. I encourage audience members to recognize themselves as active participants instead of just spectators - if there is an appropriate opportunity for audience interaction, I take it. All in all, I love traditions, surprises, and audience engagement.

I find myself naturally drawn to incorporating song and dance, relying on Original Practices, and including the occasional movement piece or tableau. I enjoy collaborating with artists and giving them freedom to experiment with the source material.

Stage Managing

In a business where we are asked to take risks, to dare to be uncomfortable, my greatest responsibility as a stage manager is safety. Is this a safe working environment? Are all artists, including actors, directors, designers, feel that they have the tools to succeed and the trusting relationships needed to explore and create? I aim to help facilitate physical, mental, and spiritual safety for everyone I come in contact with. This means I highly value communication, honesty, and courage to speak up against wrongs.

As a stage manager, I view myself as a collaborater, helper, and organizer of creative chaos.
